Event Details
In June 1948 the Empire Windrush docked in Tilbury Port, carrying Commonwealth citizens from the Caribbean invited to help rebuild post-war Britain. 70 years on and the recent Windrush scandal has brought this generation into the limelight as they are threatened with deportation, but who are the Windrush generation and what is their legacy?
In this event we will explore the lives and contributions of Britain’s Caribbean community to building the multicultural nation we have today. Speakers include Patrick Vernon OBE, social activist, political commentator and Editor in Chief of Black History Month UK, and Stephen Bourne, award-winning social historian and author of over 15 books including Black Poppies: Britain’s Black Community and the Great War, Evelyn Dove: Britain’s Black Cabaret Queen and new title War to Windrush. More speakers TBC.
